Korber's Atelier Studio K-18 in Hundheim, Germany

When I first came to Germany, I lived in Düsseldorf and then moved to Hundheim (Morbach), a small town in the picturesque countryside. There I was a guest of the artist and friend R.O. Schabbach. His Studio K18 building, which was only a few minutes away from the town center, was bustling with creative energy. Olaf was working on his artwork on the ground floor, I was working in my studio, and Sherri Tyler, Olaf's wife and founder of the movement "Love & Light for World Peace", was creating and practicing for her performances in her studio upstairs.

My stay in Germany was focused on preparation for my upcoming exhibition in Luxembourg and the winding Moselle Valley provided an inspiring backdrop for my life at the time. There I explored the lush countryside, rolling hills with vines, hilltop castles, riverside towns with their rustic half-timbered houses, and the centuries-old passageways of bernkastel-kues. I also did a lot of drawing and journaling to record these experiences. One of my favorite things to do was visiting the local bakeries. And YES I enjoyed freshly baked breads of all shapes and types, which even now make my mouth water as I write this.

My first encounter with the neighbors happened when I was cutting wood for my stretchers in the backyard workshop. When I turned around, five gentlemen were standing there. They did not complain about the noise, but rather they were enthusiastically discussing the features of my brand new circular saw, made in Germany of course. It seemed as if the roar of the saw blade, like the call of a siren, attracted the curiosity of the neighbors enjoying the local pub around the corner. The memory of that moment still brings a smile to my face.

It was there that I...

  • Drove down a one-way street the wrong way... one time ONLY.

  • Wondered in the Black Forest filled with its dense, and tall evergreens.

  • Learned that there are over 300 types of bread.

  • Ate delicious oven toasted "Brettchen mit Nutella"... Yum!

  • Had the best white wine vinaigrette from a vineyard in the Moselle region.

  • Painted in the countryside.

  • Gazed at the stars.

  • Bought my $88.00 325i BMW from a friend... Thank you!

  • Celebrated my birthday with a friend in a silver Elvis suit.

  • Walked past the thinnest 600-year-old house in bernkastel-kues.

  • Ate decadent cherries covered in German chocolate.

  • Bought a friend a vintage wind-up toy after eating ice cream.

  • Walked through the large ancient Roman city gate (Porta Nigra) and the ruins of the Roman baths in Trier.

  • Consumed bags of gummy bears on trips to Luxembourg.

Although my country life in Germany was brief, it enabled me to find my bearings in this part of the world. The beauty of Germany and the golden fields when the rapeseed blossoms in spring cannot be easily forgotten. Thanks to the hospitality and support from Olaf and Sherri, my transition to living in Europe went with much less difficulty.

About Germany

Offenbach-Hundheim is a scenic part of the district of Kusel in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. This region is considered one of the best wine-growing areas in the world due to its excellent grapes and uniquely fertile soil. An exploration of the Mosel riverside villages is undeniably a page out of a fairy tale with its winding streets, castles and it even includes bears in the fountain, bronze ones to be exact.
